Sublime freedom and masterly control
On June 11, the Russian grandmaster among pianists will perform for the first time in the magnificent hall of the Philharmonique in Liėge, under the auspices of World Master Pianists. Grigory Sokolov is undoubtedly one of the most impressive living pianists.
He turns music to his will with such conviction that it is taken for granted, and yet it sounds new. His performance is a search for the essence, for deeper layers, and under his hands every familiar piece becomes a discovery. Sokolov is superior, but never arrogant; he is the very top, but above everything else he puts himself at the service of the music.
Following one of his recitals, a reviewer of NRC Handelsblad: “You can seek your happiness in travel, spiritual trips or books. Or you can attend a recital by the Russian master pianist. An evening with Sokolov is like a journey, because his music is itself an adventure of, and for, the mind. Sokolov is not to be missed: the sacred concentration that occurs when a pianist lives for music as a sublime expression of human ability, suffering and ecstasy.”

The Philharmonic Hall was inaugurated in 1887. Since the inauguration, with the help of Eugène Ysaÿe, it has seen the greatest artists of its time walk its halls: from Gustav Mahler (who conducted his 2nd Symphony there) to Olivier Messiaen, Iannis Xenakis, Luciano Berio, Philippe Boesmans or Pascal Dusapin. Since September 2000 it is wholly managed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of Liège, which gives its own symphonic concerts there, as well as hosting chamber music, world music or early music performances. The hall has a capacity of 1.129 seats.
